How to Record a Pattern
First, get set up to do the recording:
1. Power up the 01.
2. Press SEQ to enter Sequencer Mode.
3. Press "0" to go to Page 0. The first time you go to Page 0 after entering Sequencer Mode, the cursor is always on the Song # field (line 5, button A).
4. Go to line 5 (which you may already be on), then press B to select the Current Track field. Enter the Track# that has the Program you want the Pattern to sound like. That is, the Program in the current Track is what you will hear as you record the Pattern.
5. Press "7" to go to Page 7: PATTERN.
6. Press A to select the Pattern Number field. Enter the Pattern Number you want to record onto.
7. Press B to select the Tempo field. Enter the Tempo you want to record at.
8. Press D to select the Quantization field. Enter or select the amount of quantization you want applied.
9. Press E or F to select the Metronome ON/OFF/RECORD field. Select when you want the metronome to sound.

You are now ready to record a 1-measure Pattern in 4/4 time with a High Base Resolution. If you want to change any of those three default settings, go to Line 4:Pattern Parameter (3 clicks down).

To start actaully recording your Pattern:
1. Press REC/WRITE. The red light in the REC/WRITE button turns on, and the green light in the START/STOP button begins flashing at the tempo you set earlier.

2. Press START/STOP to start recording. The metronome will sound during the lead-in (as specified in the metronome Page) and the light in the START/STOP button will blink red on the first beat of the measure. You may begin playing after the lead-in. (Note: If the corsor was in the Pattern field when you pressed START/STOP, it will now move to the Tempo field because you can't change Patterns while recording Patterns.)

3. At the end of the Pattern, the 01 will automatically re-start at the beginning of that Pattern. Whatever you recorded the last time will now be played back while you are still recording. So you can enter the kick drum the first time through, enter a snare the next time, then other instruments on following loops.

4. Press START/STOP when you are finished recording.

Pattern # (line 5, column A) Values: 0 - 99
Select the Pattern number you want to work with. Pattern numbers were assigned when you created the Pattern using Pattern Parameter. Use the VALUE controls, or Direct Entry while pressing "A".

Tempo (line 5, column B) Values: 40 - 240, EXT
Enter the tempo as the number of beats per minute. This tempo is used only to help you record the Pattern. The tempo value you enter here is not stored or used anywhere else. Use the VALUE controls, or Direct Entry while pressing "A".

Measure # (line 5, column C) Values: 1 - 999
This field shows the current measure being played or recorded to. For recording Patterns, this is just an informative display, not something you can set.

Quantize (line 5, column D)
Values: HI (VALUE slider full down), 32nd-triplet, 32nd, 16th-triplet, 16th, 8th-triplet, 8th, quarter-note (slider full up).
You can have the 01 quantize your key hits as you record. Values can be entered using the VALUE controls or Direct Entry.
Click here for a table of Diret Entry numbers and the quantization values they enter.
Click here for general information about quantizing.

Metronome (line 6, column D) Values: Off, On, Record
Off: The metronome never plays. (VALUE SLIDER full down)
On: The metronome plays during record and playback. (VALUE SLIDER 3/4 up)
Record: The metronome plays only during recording, not during playback. (VALUE SLIDER full up)

The cost of using the metronome is one voice of the 32 voices you have available. You can change the metronome setting while you are recording the Pattern.

[ADD][RMV] (line 6, column G) Values: "add" and "remove"
These commands are selected while recording by using the VALUE controls (Move the slider all the way down to select Add, all the way up to select Remove.)

While ADD is showing, keys you hit will be recorded into the Pattern.
While RMV is showing, holding a key down will erase all recording of that key for as long as the key is held down.

Erase command (line 6, column H)
This command appears while recording. Pressing ERA will delete all recorded data for as long as it is pressed.

Key Dynamics (2-126, Key)
There are two types of Key Dynamics you can select: Fixed and Variable.

Fixed: If you know the Key Velocity you want, enter the number (from 002 to 126). It won't matter how hard you actually hit the key since you are entering the velocity here.

One technique is to set a number (Korg chose V064, I prefer V100) and record the entire sequence. You can go back later and edit the velocity if you don't like it (see Event Edit).

Click here to see a table relating loudness terms (like "forte") to MIDI velocity values.
Be aware there are no set rules relating terms to velocity - it's all relative. To complicate matters, you can select different Velocity Curves for the 01. This means that the same velocity setting can sound different depending on the Curve you have selected. Regardless of how complicated things can get, the table can be a starting point.

Variable: By selecting KEY, the sequencer records the actual velocity of the key when you hit it.. The Note Duration will NOT be affected by how long you hold down the key. Duration is set by Step Time only. To select "Key", slide the VALUE SLIDER all the way up, or press and hold "D" while you enter any number higher than 127.

Go back one step. Data in the step you are going back to will be erased automatically. If you press a note whole holding "<", only the pressed note will be erased.

Pattern Parameter (Line 4, column A-D: 3 clicks down.)
Pattern # Beat: n/d B.Res: (Low or Hi) Length (00-99) [SET]
A B C D E F G H

The procedure for defining a Pattern is simple:
1. Assign it a Pattern Number.
  Push A.
  Enter a number from 00 - 99.

2. Assign a time signature
  Push B or C.
Enter a time signature using the VALUE controls or Direct Entry. Direct Entry limits the numerator (top number) to a single digit, automatically switching to the denominator for the second number you enter. You will have to use the VALUE controls for odd time signatures.

The time signatures you have to choose from depend on the Base Resolution you have selected. (If the Base Resolution for the Song is different than what you assign on this page, the Song's Base Resolution will be used.) Click to see a table of time signatures available with each Base Resolution setting.

3. Select a Base Resolution. Usually you would choose "Hi" unless you need a time signature that is not available with the High setting.

4. Set the length of the Pattern. Enter how many measures the Pattern will be.

5. Press [SET] to lock the Pattern Parameters into the assigned Pattern Number.

Bounce Pattern (line 3, column E-H: 2 clicks up.)
Pattern # =====> Pattern # [BOUNCE]
A B C D E F G H

Bouncing Patterns means to combine (or merge, or overlay) two patterns to create a new third Pattern. The term "bounce" comes from multi-track tape recording, when two or more recorded tracks (say tracks 1, 2, and 3) would be mixed together during playback and recorded on track 4, all at the same time. Tracks 1, 2, and 3 were said to be "bounced" to track 4.

In the case of the 01, only two Patterns are mixed together. One Pattern is called the Source, the other is called the Destination. The Source and Destination Patterns are mixed together, and the resulting new Pattern is written in the Destination Pattern number. The original Destination Pattern is erased.

How to Bounce Two Patterns.
1. Specify the Source Pattern number.
  a. Press button "B" or "C" to select the Source Pattern Number field.
  b. Enter the Source Pattern number using Direct Entry or the VALUE slider/buttons.

2. Specify the Pattern number you want to mix with the Source Pattern number.
  a. Press button "D", "E", or "F" to select the Destination Pattern Number field.
  b. Enter the Source Pattern number using Direct Entry or the VALUE slider/buttons.

3. Execute the Bounce command.
Press button "G" or "H". The 01 display will show the word "Completed".

You will not be asked to verify this command - as soon as you press "G" or "H", it happens, and the Pattern originally in the Destination Pattern number will be erased. If you made a mistake, you can press "COMPARE" to restore the old Destination Pattern data.

Note: The time signature and length of the original Destination Pattern will be used for the new, mixed pattern.

Copy Pattern (line 4, column E-H: 1 click up.)
Pattern # =====> Pattern # [COPY]
A B C D E F G H

Once you have recorded a Pattern, you can copy that Pattern into another Pattern number. After doing a Copy, you would have the same Pattern at two different addresses, which would be a waste of space, right? Right. The most common reason to use the Copy Pattern command is to re-arrange your Patterns in the address space. For example, you may want to reserve Pattern numbers 00 through 09 for use in Song 0, Pattern numbers 10 through 19 for Song 1, and so on up through Song 9 getting Pattern numbers 90 through 99.

How to Copy a Pattern
1. Press button "B" or "C" to select the source Pattern number field.
2. Enter the Pattern number you want to copy. Use Direct Entry, the Value Slider, or Value Buttons.
3. Press button "D", "E", or "F" to select  the destination Pattern number field.
4. Enter the Pattern number you want to copy the Pattern to. Use Direct Entry, the Value Slider, or Value Buttons.
5. Press button "G" or "H" to execute the Copy command, but BE CAREFUL because the copy will happen as soon as you press "G" or "H". That is, you will not be asked to confirm you really want to copy. You can overwrite an existing Pattern accidentally.

If you do accidentally overwrite a Pattern, try pressing the "COMPARE" button. You may still be able to retrieve the overwritten Pattern.
