Puebloan Handprints

Wall of hands, Native American Rock Art

Wall of Negative Handprints

Many of the Puebloan panels, such as the All American Man panel, display handprints along with the other images, as if the artists were signing their work. Handprints are thought to be a way of saying "we were here," with a classic example being the Chaco Canyon 1054 Supernova painting showing a new moon, a bright star, and a single handprint.

Negative and painted handprints. This particular set of Puebloan prints are found next to a number of painted Barrier Canyon style figures.

Painted and Stamped Handprints. Note the paint missing from the palm area on the brighter red stamped hands, which is common with pressed handprints.

White painted handprints

Painted handprints, some with horizontal stripes. These may have been painted onto the artist's hand and then pressed onto the wall.
