One Face Panel / Cave of 200 Hands

Needles District, Canyonlands Fremont Style Panel

Getting to this painting, which I call One Face Panel, requires going to the far side of the Needles District of Canyonlands. Nearby is a better known Anasazi panel, Cave of 200 Hands.

Close up of Anasazi Panel

With its white outline, feather, and slit eyes, the central figure is similar to some of the Anasazi "Faces Motif" figures found in other areas of Canyonlands.

Section of 200 Hands Panel

A section of the Cave of 200 Hands Panel. I'd heard of this panel for years and I was expecting it to be larger, but it's a fairly small overhang with many muddy colored (red, brown, and pink) handprints and fading figures. The spalling rock is quickly contributing to the deterioration of the panel.

The handprints are fairly small and my companion was of the impression that a fair amount of them were children's handprints. One can crawl onto the ledge in front and, looking up, see handprints everwhere.
