Chumash Painted Cave, California

Painted Cave, California, Large panel

This cave of Chumash rock art is near Santa Barbara, California and is a State Historic Park. Being so close to civilization (there are homes within a few minutes walk) it has suffered from vandalism but is still spectacular.

Gate in front of Painted Cave

To prevent further vandalism the state put this amazing gate in front of the cave, making it difficult to see the art, even on a sunny day (the cave faces north). The main panel is on the wall to the right and the small panel, below, is about 25 feet away at the back of the cave. Bring the biggest flashlight you can and a small pair of binoculars. They ask that you don't use a flash which means you really can't take decent photos as there's no way to set up a tripod.

Painted Cave, California, Small Panel

This panel is in the back of the cave. The perspective is off as the painting is partially on the ceiling of the cave.
