Full service music store, good range though nothing particularly exotic, hire department, music school, PA and studio installation, twoexperienced luthiers (Craig and Dave). Competitive prices for everyone... don't have to beg to get a cut on list prices and regulars usually get an even better cut. Friendly staff, mostly long term employees who know their area of specialty well. |

Specialist Bass Store, good range including some exotic stuff, lots of consigment basses, music school, experienced luthier and amp repair. Friendly staff, though apart from Karl (the owner) the faces tend to change so its hard to build up relationships with them..... and they tend to look down on you as a bassist if aren't a slap monster. |

Squid is about a 40 minute drive from Los Angeles and is in the vicinity of Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. Matter of fact, Curt Anderson, the owner, gets alot of business during the summer from bands playing at Knott's. Since Squid is just down the street from Knott's, this is the first place people will go to when something breaks before a gig. The store has a wide range of used, new, and vintage/semi-vintage gear. The inventory is priced to move and has the best prices for used equipment in the Southern California area. Most of the guitars and basses will be in the $100 to $400 range. I'm a bass collector as well as a player so I get alot of my basses from Squid. Squid also sells guitars, amps, drums, MIDI, and various accessories as well. Curt is the coolest 20-something that I know of who owns a business of his own. When he is not there, Jay (I don't know his last name), is very helpful as well. They do music lessons on the premises as well as some amp repair. Great place! My husband and I are there at least twice a month. |

Phillip H. Ralph, II is a good luthier. I had him replace a broken nut on a Fender once and he only charged for the cost of the part. He's pretty busy, though, as he works by himself. His shop is located in the back of the Guitar Center, in the parking lot. He shares the space with a guy who does amp repair. |

Call Bill Asher at Guitar Traditions in Santa Monica, CA at 310-573-9144. Bill used to run my repair dept. (which I don't do anymore), and he's done the neck surgery bit on a number of instruments.">>>>> |

For repair/maintenance/building work there is nowhere even close to The Guitar Factory (407-425-1070, 800-541-1070). These guys started out working for Mike Tobias in 1972, and are the factory authorized repair station for more brands than I would even like to try and remember. Also they make some of the most incredible basses I've ever had the privelage of playing (I own 2, so I may be a little prejudiced...hehee). |

If you need gear in the Orlando area, I would recommend Bass Central (407-628-1213), they seem to have quite a bit of high end stuff there, besides, it's owned by Beaver Felton and Dave LaRue, you may get to "hang" with them some if you stop in. One word of warning though, DO NOT let the guys that do repair work there even touch your bass. Bass Central shares a store front with a place called Lyrical Lumber, nice guys, but they're just nowhere near the Guitar Factory for doing repair work, and that's not my personal prejudice, that is just plain truth. |

In West Palm Beach, I have heard really good things about a place run by Kevin Kaufmann, I believe it's under his last name. He did all of Jaco's work for him, and now is doing all of Scott Henderson's stuff (as I understand it, he goes on the road with Scott sometimes as a tech). I haven't been there personally, and don't know the phone #, but I'm sure it's listed in the WPB phonebook. |

Inbetween, there is a shop in Jensen Beach called Resurrection Guitars, I've talked to the guy that runs that shop, and he seems to be pretty knowledgeable and easy to deal with. The phone # there is 334-0410 or 34-5193 (that # is for Venturini Music, but they'll hook you up with Resurrection, same situation as Bass Central/Lyrical Lumber). |

Restoration, repairs and setups of string basses. Great bows. String Basses The Kolsteins has seen the insides of more old Italian basses then anyone else alive. High intergrity, no one was ever sorry they did business with the Kolsteins. |

MRM is located a few blocks east of downtown, near the Univ of Oregon campus. Ask for Dick. Great store; leans more toward guitar than bass but they can help you out with anything. New bass lines -- Pedulla (some day.....), Peavey (basses & amps), GK, SWR. This is where I bought my SWR amp head & they matched the lowest price I found on the internet. Occasionally they willl have some interesting used basses as well. Allow plenty of time if you visit with a guitar player; the walls are lined with vintage Martins, Fenders, Guild, Gibsons both acoustic & electric. Wanna buy or order a new Taylor, Martin, PRS, & a Matchless amp, this is the place. Oregon has no sales tax, so this is a good place to buy high-ticket items. |

This is TR Kelley's store of choice; she says they're more woman-friendly than MRM; also tend to have lower-end gear than MRM (no vintage Martins for shipment to collectors, for example). Good prices on strings. They are indeed nice guys & the location is great for people playing downtown clubs. Oregon has no sales tax, so this is a good place to buy high-ticket items. |

Trad music store environment with focus on new equipment from well-known lines (big Fender & Ibanez dealer for example). They carry Eden & Trace amps; Bag End cabs. Prices? They discount below list but not by very much. The downtown location is convenient for visitors but theSpringfield store has more bass stuff & also has Todd, who is probably the most knowledgable bass sales person in the area. Oregon has no sales tax, so this is a good place to buy high-ticket items. |

Yes, the "big guys" have a store in town, much to the chagrin of the locals. They have a great line of products & some of their prices can be outstanding, though. The guitar player in my band lives just a few blocks away & has been taking his instruments there for setup work; apparently they have a new tech who does an excellent job. Oregon has no sales tax, so this is a good place to buy high-ticket items. |
